On March 20, the CESC2025 Third International Energy Storage Conference opened in Nanjing. This conference, hosted by the Jiangsu Energy Storage Industry Association and co-organized by the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce New Energy Chamber, and the Electric Power Planning and Engineering Institute, with support from the China World Trade Organization Research Association, the Nanjing International Chamber of Commerce, and State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd., focuses on the theme of "Supporting Dual Carbon Goals & Driving the Future with ESS." It brings together government departments, academic research institutions, enterprises, and industry associations to discuss the latest advancements and future trends in energy storage technology, aiming to promote the green transformation and sustainable development of the global energy industry.
New-type energy storage is increasingly becoming a key technology for building China's new energy and power systems, serving as an important direction for nurturing emerging industries and a crucial driver for promoting the green and low-carbon transition in energy production and consumption. Li Feng, Deputy Director and Member of the Party Leadership Group, First-Class Inspector of the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Industry and Information Technology, and Director of the Jiangsu National Defense Science and Technology Industry Office, introduced that currently, the pace of the new-type energy storage industry in Jiangsu is accelerating, forming a certain first-mover advantage nationwide. The industrial scale leads domestically, with the sales revenue of the new-type energy storage industry chain exceeding 200 billion yuan in 2024, and the production of lithium batteries accounting for about one-third of the national total. The industrial chain is basically complete, covering upstream segments such as ESS batteries and materials, battery management systems, power conversion systems, and energy management systems, midstream system integration and installation, and downstream ESS applications.
Tong Chunping, Second-Level Inspector of the Jiangsu Development and Reform Commission, pointed out that in recent years, Jiangsu has actively promoted the R&D and application of energy storage technologies, accelerating the layout and development of the energy storage industry, achieving significant results. In 2024, 48 new grid-side ESS projects were put into operation across the province, with a total capacity of 5.28 million kW, and the cumulative installed capacity of new-type ESS projects reached 6.65 million kW, ranking first in the country in terms of grid-side ESS scale.
To promote high-quality development in the energy storage industry, Ma Jianchun, President of the China World Trade Organization Research Association, stated that international cooperation is key to overcoming technological bottlenecks. He called for deeper joint R&D among companies and research institutions worldwide, pushing energy storage technology towards higher efficiency, safety, and accessibility. He hopes that global partners can jointly explore international standards and trade rules in the ESS sector based on the international trade rules formed by the World Trade Organization, reducing technical barriers, enhancing trade facilitation, and fostering a favorable international trade environment. Through continuous exploration in the deep integration of the energy storage industry with green finance and low-carbon trade, practical solutions for the global energy transition will be provided, opening up new paths for green economic growth.
Qu Feng, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and General Manager of China Gezhouba Group Electric Power Co., Ltd., stated that the company is currently strengthening long-term cooperation with scientific research institutes and technology companies in the areas of industry-university-research-application, vigorously promoting breakthroughs in new-type energy storage technologies such as flywheel ESS, power ESS, and molten salt ESS, and deeply integrating new-type ESS with new energy businesses. In the future, the company will continue to lead with technological innovation, deepen its layout in the ESS sector, and actively seize the high ground in the energy industry's development.
At the conference, Jantho Milatthanaphone, Director of the Department of Energy, Ministry of Energy and Mines of Laos, and Andrew Robb, former Minister for Trade and Investment of Australia, delivered speeches.
The pre-release ceremony of the "Advanced Energy Storage Technologies and Applications Guide" and the launch ceremony of the nation's first "New Energy Microgrid and ESS Training Base" also took place during this summit forum.
Wang Zhonglin, Director and Chief Scientist of the Beijing Institute of Nanoenergy and Systems, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, shared on the topic of "High-Entropy Energy and Sensing."
Kuo Liu, Dean of the School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Southern University of Science and Technology and Foreign Academician of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering, presented on the topic of "Green Liquids: Discussion on Long Duration Energy Storage Technology - Establishing a Green Methanol National Standard with Chinese Characteristics to Promote Carbon Neutrality."
Zeng Shaojun, Professional Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce New Energy Chamber, shared insights on "Progress and Prospects of China's New Energy Sector."
An award ceremony for the "China ESS Industry Pioneers (2025)" will also be held in the evening.
The three-day conference includes a summit forum and multiple parallel sessions, focusing on topics such as the new energy ship industry, hydrogen industry, powder coating for the safe, efficient, and green development of the new energy storage industry, and the coordinated development of AI and digitalization with green initiatives. It gathers experts, scholars, enterprise representatives, and financial institutions in the ESS sector to discuss the latest advancements and future trends in energy storage technology, collectively promoting the high-quality development of the ESS industry.
From March 20 to 22, the Smart Energy Storage Technology and Application Exhibition will also be held concurrently, where hundreds of companies, including BYD, Sineng Electric, Tongqi New Energy, Zhongke Haiao, and Sungrow, will showcase a series of achievements in the ESS sector, including compressed air ESS, flywheel ESS, electrochemical ESS, electromagnetic ESS, and thermal/cold ESS.
CESC2025, the Third International Energy Storage Conference and Smart Energy Storage Technology and Application Exhibition (referred to as CESC), is jointly organized by the Jiangsu Energy Storage Industry Association, the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce New Energy Chamber, and the Electric Power Planning and Engineering Institute, with strong support from the Jiangsu Development and Reform Commission, the Jiangsu Department of Industry and Information Technology, the Jiangsu Department of Commerce, and State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd. It serves as a significant platform in the global ESS sector, leading the development of China's ESS industry. As the first exhibition in the ESS industry in 2025, CESC is sponsored by BYD and Sineng Electric, inviting government leaders, academicians, and industry experts to focus on the development of ESS technology, providing the latest market information and technical exchanges, and comprehensively showcasing the current state and future of the industry.
