Data compiled by SMM from the World Steel Association (WSA) shows that Malaysia is an important steel producer, consumer, and exporter in the Southeast Asian region. In recent years, Malaysia's crude steel production has shown an overall upward trend, increasing from 2.8 million mt in 2017 to 8.8 million mt in 2024, with a compound annual growth rate of 17.7%. Meanwhile, Malaysia's ranking among the world's major crude steel producers has also steadily risen, jumping from 39th in 2017 to 21st in 2024, demonstrating rapid development.
