According to recent data, the 40MW Greenough River solar PV plant in Western Australia was ranked as the best-performing utility-scale solar asset in Australia in February 2025 in terms of AC capacity factor. The plant’s strong performance contributed to overall growth in the country’s renewable energy generation. Data indicates that all solar PV and wind assets in Australia collectively generated over 4.5GWh of electricity in February, marking a 14% year-on-year increase from 3.9GWh in the same period last year.
The Greenough River plant is owned by Bright Energy Investments, a joint venture comprising DIF Capital Partners, superannuation fund Cbus, and state-owned Synergy. Operational since April 2018, the plant was initially developed with a 10MW first phase, later expanding by an additional 30MW to reach its current 40MW capacity.
Multiple Australian states performed well in renewable energy performance. On a state level, New South Wales led the country with 1,324GWh of generation, comprising 813GWh from utility-scale solar PV and 511GWh from wind. In the National Electricity Market (NEM), renewable energy—including hydropower and biomass—accounted for 44% of the electricity mix in February, the highest percentage recorded for the month. Meanwhile, in the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM), which covers Western Australia, the share of renewables rose to 42%, up from 37% in the previous year.
