[The World's First "Sodium-Lithium Hybrid ESS" Power Station Commences Operation in Ningxia]
Recently, the world's first "sodium-lithium hybrid ESS" power station officially commenced operation in Ningxia. This project, jointly developed by CATL and the State Grid Corporation of China, marks a significant breakthrough in the field of energy storage technology.
The "sodium-lithium hybrid ESS" technology innovatively combines sodium-ion batteries and lithium batteries. Sodium-ion batteries, with lower costs, are suitable for peak shaving tasks, while lithium batteries respond quickly and efficiently handle frequency regulation. This combination reduces the cost per kilowatt-hour by 20% and increases efficiency to 92%. Materials used in sodium-ion batteries, such as salt, iron, and manganese, are abundant and cost only about one-third of lithium battery materials, effectively alleviating the constraints of lithium ore resources.
The operation of this power station provides a new feasible model for ESS integration with wind and solar power, playing a significant role in promoting clean energy development in Ningxia and across the country, as well as enhancing the stability and reliability of the power system. It is expected to lead the energy storage industry into a new phase.
