Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On February 24 (local time), leading Chinese battery supplier CALB broke ground on its Portugal facility, which will be developed into a zero-carbon AI superfactory, according to a post on the company's WeChat account. The plant is scheduled for completion and delivery in 2027.

With an estimated investment of €2 billion, the project will establish a battery and system production line with an annual capacity of 15GWh, catering to both power battery and energy storage applications.

Ms. Liu Jingyu, Chairwoman of CALB, highlighted that Portugal's supportive policies for green energy have provided a favorable environment for the company's expansion. She emphasized that the construction of the Portugal plant aligns with China's Belt and Road Initiative and CALB's global expansion strategy, reinforcing its commitment to internationalization and fostering a mutually beneficial economic landscape.

Pedro Reis, Portugal's Minister of Economy, congratulated CALB on the groundbreaking, acknowledging the company's contributions to Portugal's clean energy transition. He noted that as the entire EU accelerates its electrification process, CALB's investment will generate more job opportunities, boost economic growth, and accelerate the decarbonization of both Portugal and Europe.

During the event, executives from CALB's European division unveiled new technologies and products for global power battery and energy storage markets. Additionally, the company signed strategic cooperation agreements with customers on-site.

CALB currently operates nine major industrial bases and five R&D centers across China, Europe, and ASEAN.

As its internationalization accelerates, the company has secured new designated platform and project contracts with global automakers such as Toyota, Volkswagen, Ford Motor, Audi, and Mazda.

World's First Mass-Produced Sodium-Ion Battery Passenger Vehicle Officially Unveiled
On February 5, Changan Automobile unveiled its global sodium-ion battery strategy, and the world's first mass-produced sodium-ion battery passenger vehicle was officially introduced. Test data shows that the vehicle equipped with CATL's sodium-ion battery delivers nearly three times the discharge power compared to conventional lithium iron phosphate vehicles with the same battery capacity under -30°C conditions. In extreme cold environments of -40°C, it maintains over 90% capacity retention, and it can still discharge stably even at the extreme low temperature of -50°C.
