Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced the country’s National Power System Expansion Plan for 2025-2030, aimed at adding 13.02 GW of new generation capacity over the next six years. The plan includes nine photovoltaic projects, with a total investment of $4.9 billion and a combined generation capacity of 4.67 GW. These projects are expected to come online between 2027 and 2028. Additionally, the plan covers seven wind power projects with a total capacity of 2.47 GW, requiring an investment of $3.2 billion.
On the fossil fuel side, the plan outlines five combined-cycle projects with a total capacity of 3.43 GW, a 240 MW internal combustion project, and three cogeneration projects in collaboration with the state-owned Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and the Mexican oil giant Pemex, adding 2.4 GW of new capacity. Claudia Sheinbaum stated that private companies will also play an active role, contributing at least 6,400 MW of capacity, with most of it coming from renewable energy. This will help mobilize market activity and accelerate the widespread use of clean energy.
In addition, the government plans to construct 10 new power plants and resume 16 hydropower projects initiated by the previous administration. Upon completion, these initiatives will add 535.6 MW of electricity generation capacity. To match the expansion in power generation, the government will also allocate $46 billion to upgrade transmission networks and $3.6 billion to enhance distribution infrastructure, aiming to comprehensively improve the efficiency of electricity transmission and distribution.
