In an era where technological innovation is advancing exponentially, a seemingly traditional material—stainless steel—is demonstrating unprecedented potential in multiple cutting-edge fields. Taking SpaceX's Starship rocket as an example, it has successfully completed multiple suborbital test flights and recovery missions, bringing global attention to the application value of stainless steel.

Before the Starship project, the idea of using stainless steel in the aerospace field might have raised many doubts. However, Elon Musk's team boldly innovated by extensively adopting 300-series stainless steel and the self-developed 30X stainless steel in the Starship. This initiative not only significantly reduced the manufacturing cost of the rocket but also greatly enhanced its structural strength, durability, and overall performance. Research shows that compared to traditional aerospace materials, stainless steel exhibits superior mechanical properties and cost-effectiveness under specific conditions.

Specifically, the materials constituting the main structure of the Starship include 301 and 304L stainless steel from the 300-series, as well as SpaceX's self-developed 30X stainless steel. The 301 stainless steel, with its high strength and good toughness, performs excellently under extreme mechanical loads. The 304L stainless steel, as an ultra-low carbon stainless steel, not only offers outstanding corrosion resistance but also demonstrates excellent compatibility in welding processes, effectively ensuring structural integrity. Meanwhile, the 30X stainless steel, developed by SpaceX as a high-end alloy material, achieves higher strength while reducing weight. Its performance parameters have been rigorously tested and validated, earning it the reputation of a "super material" in the aerospace field.

The Starship, serving as the crewed lunar lander for the Artemis III mission, is expected to launch in mid-2027. SpaceX aims to use the innovative Starship platform to reduce the cost per launch to a fraction of that of traditional rockets, thereby driving profound changes in the space economy. The successful application of stainless steel materials is undoubtedly one of the key factors in achieving this ambitious goal.

The innovative applications of stainless steel are not limited to the aerospace field. In the green energy sector, stainless steel is widely used in key components of solar panel mounting brackets and wind power equipment due to its excellent corrosion resistance and high strength. In the automotive industry, stainless steel, with its corrosion resistance, high-temperature strength, and good machinability, has become the ideal material for manufacturing key components such as exhaust systems and catalytic converters. In the NEV sector, stainless steel is further applied in battery pack housings and motor housings, significantly improving battery safety and vehicle driving range by optimizing material structures and manufacturing processes.

The smart home and home appliance sectors are also filled with the presence of stainless steel. In high-end home appliances such as smart refrigerators and smart washing machines, stainless steel has become an important element for enhancing product quality and user experience due to its durability, aesthetic appeal, and ease of cleaning. Continuous innovation in surface treatment processes has further expanded the application scope of stainless steel in the home appliance field.

In the construction sector, the innovative applications of stainless steel are equally remarkable. In several architectural projects in cities like Beijing, stainless steel 3D printing technology has been successfully applied to produce architectural models, personalized decorative components, and non-load-bearing structural parts. This technology has broken through the limitations of traditional manufacturing processes, achieving high-precision manufacturing at the millimeter or even micron level, providing strong support for the realization of complex architectural structures and unique design concepts.

In summary, the widespread application of stainless steel, a traditional material, in emerging industries not only highlights its strong vitality and adaptability but also provides new solutions for technological innovation and cost optimization across various sectors. In today's rapidly developing technological landscape, re-examining and tapping into the potential of traditional materials may bring us more unexpected innovative outcomes and economic benefits.

[SMM Flash News] Indonesia Postpones Export Levy on Nickel Products to Re-evaluate Balanced Formula
Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, announced on Monday (May 11, 2026) that the government is suspending the planned implementation of export levies (bea keluar) on downstream nickel products to develop a more balanced "win-win" formula for both the state and private sectors. While the levy is intended to incentivize smelters to move beyond Nickel Pig Iron (NPI) production, which has currently achieved only 40% of its downstream potential, the government is opting for a "wise" approach following industry feedback.

NPI Market Stagnant at High Levels, Supply-Demand Divergence Persists
[SMM Nickel Flash] On May 11, the NPI market remained stagnant at high levels, with a wide quotation range and notable supply-demand divergence. Suppliers had a strong willingness to hold prices firm, supported by solid cost underpinning. Downstream steel mills mainly made just-in-time procurement, while end-users were wary of high prices and wait-and-see sentiment was prevalent. Overall market transactions were sluggish, with only a small volume of hedging cargoes released as futures held steady.
