On February 5, SAIC Volkswagen announced that its fifth-generation EA888 engine has gone into mass production in China first. The engine will debut on the Teramont Pro model.

Leveraging advanced technologies such as direct injection, turbocharging, and dual balance shafts, the EA888 engine has powered multiple models across brands including Porsche, Audi, and Volkswagen.

The fifth-generation EA888 engine features a 500bar fuel system, delivering high injection pressure for increased power output. Compared to the third-generation high-output version, the new EA888 engine boosts maximum power from 162 kW to 200 kW (a 23.5% jump) and torque from 350 N·m to 400 N·m (a 14.3% gain). With this power upgrade, the Teramont Pro can achieve 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in 7.6 seconds.

To accommodate the increased power performance, the engine's critical components like the crankshaft, connecting rods, and pistons have been structurally reinforced. The crankshaft and main oil passages have been redesigned, improving load-bearing capacity and lubrication performance. Notably, the fifth-generation EA888 engine introduces a vane-type oil pump, enhancing oil circulation rates.

To further enhance throttle response, the fifth-generation EA888 engine has shortened air intake path, allowing boosted air to reach the intake manifold more efficiently. The integrated inter-cooler intake manifold design also introduces a heating and cooling cycle for the throttle body and intake manifold, preventing throttle body icing in extreme cold conditions, thus enhancing engine reliability and durability.

The fifth-generation EA888 engine adopts Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) turbocharging technology, enabling intelligent air intake adjustments under both low- and high-speed conditions while reducing turbo lag.

The newly launched engine also features a redesigned camshaft and VTG turbocharger, enabling Miller cycle operation across all conditions. Combined with high-swirl intake ports, an integrated exhaust manifold, and a 500bar high-pressure fuel injection system, the engine achieves ideal fuel-air mixture combustion ratio. Besides, powered by the fifth-generation EA888 engine, vehicles can reduce fuel consumption to 8.35 L/100 km under the WLTC conditions.
