Iron Ore Imports Show Slight Profit Rise Despite Declining Shipments

Publicado: Jan 14, 2025 09:36
According to the SMM imported ore cost-profit table, the profit of imported ore rose slightly. The latest cycle's total global iron ore shipments tracked by SMM reached 28.78 million mt, down 10.3% MoM. Among them, shipments from Australia were 18.11 million mt, up 0.7% MoM, while shipments from Brazil were 5.71 million mt, down significantly by 25.1% MoM. SMM's data showed that China's iron ore port arrivals totaled 26.89 million mt, increasing slightly by 1.63% MoM. Although the shipment volume declined significantly during this cycle, considering the relatively high shipment volume for the entire month of December, January's port arrivals are expected to remain at a high level, continuing to exert pressure on ore prices due to ample iron ore supply. Given the market's potential anticipation of the end of restocking being priced in early, caution is advised regarding the risk of ore prices pulling back after a rebound. In the short term, imported ore profits are expected to remain volatile.

[Syria Reaches Agreement with Saudi Arabia to Restart Hama Steel Plant]
Syria's Ministry of Economy and Industry has signed a 30-year strategic agreement with Saudi Arabia-based Ithraa Holding Group to rehabilitate, modernize, and operate the General Company for Iron and Steel Products in Hama. Signed August 28 during the Damascus International Fair, the plan allocates the first five years to rehabilitation and modernization, followed by a 25-year operational period, with output targeted to reach at least 350,000 tonnes per year within four years. The deal marks a step toward reviving Syria's idle industrial infrastructure and reducing its reliance on steel imports, while also signaling deepening economic ties between Syria and Saudi Arabia.
