This is another innovative product continuously introduced by Chongqing University and its associated teams following the release of the world's largest magnesium alloy die-cast automotive rear floor in 2023.

According to Magnesium Window News: Recently, under the guidance of Academician Fusheng Pan from Chongqing University, the National Engineering Research Center for Magnesium Alloys at Chongqing University, in collaboration with the National Key Laboratory for High-End Equipment Casting Technology, Chongqing Dicastal Jet Wheel Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Ningbo Free Trade Zone Haitian Zhisheng Metal Forming Equipment Co., Ltd., Baowu Magnesium's Chongqing Boao Magnesium-Aluminum Metal Manufacturing Co., Ltd., Chongqing Borun Mold Co., Ltd., and Chongqing Mingyue Lake Laboratory, successfully developed and trial-produced the world's first semi-solid magnesium alloy automotive wheel in batches using Haitian Zhisheng's newly launched 3600T semi-solid magnesium alloy injection molding machine. This is another innovative product launched by Chongqing University and its partners following the release of the world's largest magnesium alloy die-cast automotive rear floor in 2023.

Currently, magnesium alloy automotive wheels are primarily manufactured using solid-state forging. In this trial production, the project team successfully produced 16-inch wheels for standard passenger cars for the first time using semi-solid injection molding technology combined with four types of magnesium alloys. The single injection volume reached 10 kg, and the net weight of the wheel was 7 kg, achieving a weight reduction of approximately 30% compared to traditional aluminum alloy wheels. This demonstrates significant lightweighting effects, along with notable reductions in material and manufacturing costs. Next, the project team will closely collaborate with upstream and downstream industry partners and end-users to advance the forward design and development of products based on semi-solid processes, achieving dual benefits of weight reduction and carbon emission reduction.

In recent years, the demand for automotive lightweighting has become increasingly urgent to achieve the national "carbon peak and carbon neutrality" goals. As the lightest structural metal material, magnesium alloy has a density of only two-thirds that of aluminum alloy and one-fourth that of steel, making it one of the most promising lightweight materials. The research team at Chongqing University has made significant progress in high-performance magnesium alloys, structural components, and magnesium-based energy storage materials, effectively promoting the application of magnesium alloys in NEVs, rail transit, and aerospace, while also advancing energy storage technologies such as magnesium hydrogen storage and magnesium batteries.

Moreover, China is rich in magnesium resources, accounting for over 70% of the global magnesium resources. The production of magnesium and magnesium alloys in China has accounted for more than 80% of the global share for over a decade, giving it significant influence in the global magnesium materials field. The rapid development and large-scale application of magnesium and magnesium alloys hold strategic importance for promoting energy conservation and emission reduction, ensuring energy security, and alleviating the shortage of metal mineral resources.

Verde Magnesium Advances Romania Project to Become Europe's First Primary Producer in 25 Years
[SMM Magnesium Express] Verde Magnesium is advancing its Budureasa magnesium project in Romania, aiming to become Europe's first primary magnesium producer in 25 years. The project uses an aluminothermic reduction process with renewable energy and CO₂ capture, claiming the world's lowest carbon footprint for primary magnesium. Mine restart is targeted for end-2026, with a 30,000 tpa smelter by 2030. Europe currently imports 100% of its magnesium, with China supplying 90% of global production.
