The Port Authority of Cartagena aims to implement a 20 MW solar energy system by 2030 to power nearly 200 cruise ships annually. Initially, 13 MW will be operational by 2025, with completion expected by 2030. Ships will connect to the port's electrical grid, allowing them to turn off their engines and reduce emissions.

A battery system will store excess energy, but additional power will be drawn from the renewable-powered general grid if needed. In December 2024, a tender process was initiated for designing and executing the solar installations on port buildings.

With a tender budget of 604,594.58 euros and an estimated contract value of 499,664.94 euros, the project aims to be finished in 28 months. The solar installations will support self-consumption, with no energy sold to the grid.
