Vale and GreenIron will collaborate to establish an iron ore supply chain through a direct reduction facility in Brazil, advancing green hydrogen-based iron production for the European market. According to the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the two companies will focus on supplying iron ore agglomerates to GreenIron's commercial operations in Sandviken, Sweden, and producing reduced iron locally using hydrogen.
Through a feasibility study, they will identify suitable locations for the Brazilian project while considering renewable energy and resource supply options. GreenIron's technology is highly flexible in terms of raw material selection and capacity, reportedly capable of reducing costs and being compatible with the use of green hydrogen. The scale-up is expected by 2025.
