[SMM Analysis] Why Does Lithium Manganese Iron Phosphate Choose Mn3O4 as Its Manganese Source?

The specific process route for LMFP is still under exploration, with significant differences among various companies and no unified standards. As a result, the manganese sources used also vary, including manganese tetraoxide, manganese carbonate, manganese dioxide, and manganese oxalate, all of which are adopted by different companies. However, research has found that manganese tetraoxide is gradually becoming the mainstream choice. Leading companies in shipments, such as Hengchuang Nano and Ronbay Skaland, have also adopted this route. One important reason is that manganese tetraoxide is cheaper, offering significant economic benefits. Secondly, manganese tetraoxide is more suitable for the two-step sintering process. Thirdly, LMFP using manganese tetraoxide combined with iron oxide as raw materials can achieve a capacity per gram of 140-155mAh/g. Fourthly, its cycling performance is superior to LMFP made with manganese dioxide or manganese carbonate. Lastly, using iron-doped manganese tetraoxide as a raw material can improve the compaction performance of LMFP.

This week, ferrous metals were in the doldrums, with coking coal and coke staging a mid-week rise. At the beginning of the week, financial markets experienced sharp fluctuations, dragging down sentiment in the ferrous chain and leading to a pullback in futures. Mid-week, Indonesia's cut to coke production quotas drove coking coal and coke futures to lead the gains, though the impact was more pronounced on thermal coal, while coking coal's rise was largely sentiment-driven and short-lived. In the latter part of the week, finished products continued their seasonal inventory buildup, and support from the raw material side weakened, causing the entire ferrous chain to pull back. In the spot market, with the Chinese New Year holiday approaching, purchasing activity slowed down further, with end-users only making limited, as-needed purchases at low prices.
