Enel is set to enhance its Dossi pumped hydro storage facility in Bergamo, Italy, with a 4 MW/8 MWh lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS), supported by the EU's Innovation Fund. This addition will provide a supplementary energy reservoir, maintaining a steady power supply and boosting the plant's flexibility and efficiency in energy storage operations.
The historic Dossi power station, established in 1923 in Valbondione and featuring a sophisticated high-altitude hydraulic system, is further complemented by the Valmorta dam from the same era and the Barbellino dam constructed in 1931, enhancing its operational capability.
Through the BESS4Hydro initiative, Enel aims to match the grid balancing efficiency of traditional thermal plants, adapt to varying demand, and market trends. The innovative BESS design facilitates autonomous operation during downtime, prolongs equipment lifespan, and ensures ongoing grid stability by reducing turbine wear and optimizing ancillary service delivery.
