In recent years, the dramatic fluctuations in lithium prices have made the industry chain experience the "bittersweet" of the market. Although current lithium prices are far from their past highs, the prospects of the new energy industry chain remain bright under the global advocacy for a low-carbon economy, and the importance of lithium resources is becoming increasingly prominent.

As one of the regions with the richest lithium resources globally, South America, especially the "Lithium Triangle" (Bolivia, Argentina, Chile), holds over 55% of the world's proven lithium resources. Therefore, South America's lithium resources play a crucial role in the global energy transition.

Against this backdrop, SMM organized the 2024 South America Lithium Resources Field Trip. Led by SMM Customer Manager Siyu Chen, the delegation visited lithium-related enterprises in South America from November 26 to December 7, 2024, toured local lithium mines and material companies, and held discussions with company executives to explore potential opportunities in lithium ore resources development, technical exchanges, and investment cooperation. On the morning of November 30, SMM and the delegation headed to Tibet Summit Resources Co., Ltd.'s subsidiary, Potasio y Litio de Argentina S.A., for in-depth exchanges.

Corporate Voices

SMM and the delegation visited Potasio y Litio de Argentina S.A., where the general manager of Tibet Summit's Argentina operations warmly welcomed the group and provided a detailed introduction to the company's business development.

Tibet Summit focuses on the upstream segment of the non-ferrous metal resources industry, leveraging its lead-zinc polymetallic mine in Tajikistan. It has become a benchmark project for Chinese enterprises successfully investing in countries along the "Belt" under the Belt and Road Initiative. Meanwhile, the company has begun investing in upstream new energy projects in Argentina along the "Road," developing lithium salt lake projects. Through continuous transformation and upgrading, the company has become one of the leading stocks in the mining resource development sector in the securities market.

In April 2018, the company, together with financial investment partners, acquired and privatized a Canadian publicly listed firm for $206.7 million, gaining full ownership of two high-quality lithium salt lake projects in Argentina with advanced development progress. This marked the company's official entry into the upstream lithium resource development sector of the new energy industry.

Technical Exchange

SMM and the delegation engaged in in-depth discussions with Tibet Summit Resources Co., Ltd. on its long-term business, policies, resources, and projects.

In Argentina, South America, Tibet Summit indirectly controls Potasio y Litio de Argentina S.A., whose Angeles Lithium Salt Lake Project holds lithium resources of 2.05 million mt LCE. Meanwhile, the Arizaro Lithium Salt Lake Project under Argentina Tosa is currently undergoing extensive exploration, with its resource technical report yet to be completed. According to independent third-party Golder Associates, the Arizaro Lithium Salt Lake Project features high-quality resources and favorable development conditions, capable of meeting the company's capacity requirements of 30,000 mt LCE for the Angeles Lithium Salt Lake Project and 50,000-100,000 mt LCE for the Arizaro Lithium Salt Lake Project.

Regarding the company's salt lake lithium extraction project with an annual production of 30,000 mt of lithium carbonate, it is reported that the project has officially obtained the "Environmental Impact Statement" (DIA) issued by relevant authorities in Salta. For the brine production well project, five brine production wells have been completed. Based on data from the first three wells, the average lithium concentration is 649.33 mg/L, significantly exceeding the average lithium concentration of 479 mg/L stated in the "Angeles Salt Lake Lithium and Potassium Resource Technical Report (NI43-101)." For the freshwater well project, six freshwater wells have been completed in the northern area of the salt lake, with both water quality and quantity exceeding expectations.

Group Photo

After touring the factory, SMM and the delegation took a group photo with the staff of Potasio y Litio de Argentina S.A., strengthening their cooperative friendship. It is believed that deeper exchanges and cooperation will follow!

Through this field trip and survey, SMM and the delegation gained a deeper understanding of Tibet Summit's development and a more profound insight into the market status, development trends, and challenges of the South American lithium battery industry. They will continue to deepen cooperation with major enterprises to achieve complementary advantages and promote the development of the lithium battery industry.
