Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On December 17, 2024, Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer Li Auto and the Aerospace Materials Institute of the Third Academy of China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation ("CASIC") jointly launched the "Advanced Thermal Insulation Materials Joint Laboratory" in Beijing, according to a post on Li Auto's WeChat account.

The collaboration aims to develop aerospace-grade thermal insulation materials suitable for power batteries, enhance the thermal safety performance of these batteries, and promote the safe development of the NEV industry.

The Aerospace Materials Institute was founded by CASIC's Flight Technology Research Institute and the Aerospace Special Materials and Technology Institute. It focuses on the development of next-generation aerospace materials and aims to establish a leading open platform for technological innovation in domestic aerospace materials, along with an integrated industrial innovation base. Leveraging its expertise in nano-insulation materials, phase-change materials, and ceramics, the institute targets industries such as aerospace, NEV, and industrial energy conservation, aiming to meet the demand for advanced thermal protection products and drive the development of high-performance nano-insulation materials for medium- and high-temperature applications.

According to the agreement, Li Auto and the Aerospace Materials Institute will jointly establish the "Advanced Thermal Insulation Materials Joint Laboratory." This partnership will combine the strengths of both parties to develop high-performance insulation materials, providing superior thermal safety solutions for power batteries.

On the same day, the two parties also unveiled the industry-leading "Nano Yi-Dun" battery insulation material.

This new material, specifically developed for Li Auto vehicles' power battery thermal safety, offers significantly enhanced insulation performance by customizing aerospace-grade materials. Compared to conventional insulation materials, the Nano Yi-Dun can lower the temperature of the cold side by up to 70°C, greatly improving the battery system's safety margin against thermal runaway under extreme conditions, said Li Auto.

World's First Mass-Produced Sodium-Ion Battery Passenger Vehicle Officially Unveiled
On February 5, Changan Automobile unveiled its global sodium-ion battery strategy, and the world's first mass-produced sodium-ion battery passenger vehicle was officially introduced. Test data shows that the vehicle equipped with CATL's sodium-ion battery delivers nearly three times the discharge power compared to conventional lithium iron phosphate vehicles with the same battery capacity under -30°C conditions. In extreme cold environments of -40°C, it maintains over 90% capacity retention, and it can still discharge stably even at the extreme low temperature of -50°C.
