Baidu said to begin Robotaxi trial operations in Hong Kong

Beijing (Gasgoo)- Baidu's autonomous ride-hailing (Robotaxi) platform, Apollo Go, is set to launch trial operations in Hong Kong, with initial testing at the airport expected to start by the end of 2024, according to a report by Hong Kong-based TVB News.

The Hong Kong Transport Department confirmed that Baidu submitted applications last month for a pilot testing license and autonomous vehicle certification, which are currently under review. The department stated that it would ensure strict safety measures and orderly processes for autonomous vehicle testing. Initial trials will be conducted during non-peak hours and involve a local backup safety driver onboard with over 10 years of driving experience.

As a global financial hub with a diverse and complex traffic environment, Hong Kong offers an ideal setting for testing autonomous driving technologies. Baidu aims to use these trials to validate the adaptability and reliability of Apollo Go's technology in preparation for future large-scale commercialization.

In the third quarter (Q3) of 2024, Apollo Go completed 988,000 autonomous ride-hailing orders, marking a 20% year-on-year increase. As of October 28, 2024, the platform had completed over 8 million ride orders for the public. Notably, fully driverless rides accounted for over 70% of the nationwide total in Q3, and the share further grew to 80% in October.
