Schaeffler officially commenced production of its shiftable one-way clutch at its manufacturing facility in Taicang, China.

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On November 19, Schaeffler officially commenced production of its shiftable one-way clutch at its manufacturing facility in Taicang, China, according to a post on the company's WeChat account.

According to Schaeffler, this innovative product is designed specifically for all-wheel-drive (AWD) new energy vehicles, enabling rapid decoupling of the wheel-end drive in two-wheel-drive (2WD) mode. When required, the system can quickly re-engage to switch to 4WD mode, delivering enhanced vehicle performance while also improving fuel efficiency to achieve longer driving ranges.

Rainer Schuebel, Head of Schaeffler's Engine and Transmission Systems business unit, emphasized that at Schaeffler, the product development is always guided by market demands and customer needs. The successful mass production of the shiftable one-way clutch reflects commitment to this philosophy. This product's rapid market launch is thanks to the company's extensive experience in powertrain applications and mass production.

According to Schaeffler's introduction, the shiftable one-way clutch is installed at the vehicle's half-shaft position. In its disengaged state, it cuts off the connection between the wheel and the auxiliary drive system, completely eliminating drag losses from the inactive auxiliary motor, thereby enhancing vehicle efficiency. When needed, the system enables a swift transition to 4WD mode, meeting the vehicle's demand for high-torque power output. Remarkably, the clutch can engage in as little as 0.08 seconds, achieving a 100% success rate.

Built on Schaeffler's proven one-way clutch technology, the system utilizes an electromagnet and cam plate to disengage using wheel-end power. Compared to motor actuators, electromagnets consume less energy and feature simpler hardware and software controls, which boosts system reliability. Additionally, the system's radial engagement design effectively eliminates the jolts typically caused by axial engagement during gear impacts.

The shiftable one-way clutch is designed as an add-on solution, allowing it to be easily integrated into existing vehicle architectures without requiring major changes. This flexibility helps reduce vehicle development time and costs. Under the WLTC (Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Cycle), the system offers up to 10% energy savings. For an electric vehicle with a 60 kWh battery, this translates to a savings of approximately 6 kWh per full charge.

World's First Mass-Produced Sodium-Ion Battery Passenger Vehicle Officially Unveiled
On February 5, Changan Automobile unveiled its global sodium-ion battery strategy, and the world's first mass-produced sodium-ion battery passenger vehicle was officially introduced. Test data shows that the vehicle equipped with CATL's sodium-ion battery delivers nearly three times the discharge power compared to conventional lithium iron phosphate vehicles with the same battery capacity under -30°C conditions. In extreme cold environments of -40°C, it maintains over 90% capacity retention, and it can still discharge stably even at the extreme low temperature of -50°C.
