According to customs data, in September 2024, China's total FeNi+NPI imports reached 737,400 mt, up 41.2% MoM and down 13.2% YoY.

According to customs data, in September 2024, China's total FeNi+NPI imports reached 737,400 mt, up 41.2% MoM and down 13.2% YoY. In terms of metal content, the total FeNi+NPI imports in September amounted to 97,000 mt (Ni contained), up 48.7% MoM and down 13.7% YoY.

By category, the increase in imports in September was mainly concentrated in NPI, with NPI imports at 715,000 mt, up 44.2% MoM and down 10.1% YoY. In September, the tightness in Indonesian nickel ore resources eased compared to the previous month, and the improvement in export resource tax tickets boosted the total exportable volume for the month. Additionally, according to SMM, entering the traditional peak season for stainless steel consumption, the previous production schedule of stainless steel mills is expected to maintain a growth trend, and the demand for raw materials remains optimistic. In terms of actual production, the domestic production of 300-series stainless steel in September was about 1.687 million mt, up about 1.17% MoM. Furthermore, the significant reduction in imports in August was mainly due to road disruptions caused by rainfall in Weda Bay and delays in customs clearance, which were resolved in September as the weather improved and customs clearance returned to normal. Entering October, with the new RKAB approvals in the Indonesian nickel ore sector and the ramp-up of new capacity, production is expected to rise. On the demand side, under the influence of domestic macro fiscal policies, the profits of stainless steel mills have recovered, and the production schedule of 300-series stainless steel remains high, with no expected decline in demand for NPI. It is anticipated that NPI imports in October will continue the upward trend from September.

Regarding FeNi, FeNi imports in September were 22,300 mt, down 15.8% MoM and down 59.1% YoY. In terms of metal content, it was 11,500 mt (Ni contained), up 78.1% MoM and down 8.2% YoY. From the perspective of import sources, the changes varied, with a significant reduction from Colombia, down about 44.6% MoM and about 38% YoY. Imports from New Caledonia were down about 39.9% MoM and about 60.2% YoY, as local FeNi producers maintained low operating rates due to riots, and future imports are expected to continue declining. On the growth side, imports from Brazil were up about 105.5% MoM and down about 28.9% YoY. In the Amazon region of Brazil, the significant drop in water levels of major rivers due to severe drought affected the efficiency of barge transportation, reducing cargo volumes and extending shipping times, with some shipments arriving in September. It is expected that with the continued entry of high-grade FeNi from Vale into the domestic market, the metal content of domestic FeNi imports may increase.

[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] EU Steel Policy: Big Industry Protected, SMEs Ignored, Quota Updates Still Delayed
A written parliamentary question posed to the European Commission asked: "What monetisable compensation does the Commission envisage for downstream producers whose embedded costs originate upstream, and who do not qualify for the decarbonisation fund?" Commissioner Hoekstra's July 14 response offered no direct answer, pointing instead to the Temporary Decarbonisation Fund — designed primarily for large EU ETS installations — with a vague note that it "may also decrease associated downstream costs," with no obligation, guarantee, or figure attached. Critics note that large integrated steelmakers benefit from multiple layers of protection including tariffs, quotas, free ETS allowances, and decarbonisation funding, while import-dependent SMEs and downstream processors face rising procurement costs, CBAM obligations, quota cuts exceeding 45%, and heavy administrative burdens — with no cumulative impact assessment ever published by the Commission. Meanwhile, steel import quota data remains poorly updated, with the Commission confirming it will update TRQs only once daily with no real-time data, and declining to recognize the "Total awaiting allocation" figure as legally binding.

[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] Outokumpu Orders Twin Ladle Furnace Upgrade for Alabama Stainless Steel Plant
Finland-based stainless steel producer Outokumpu has awarded Primetals Technologies an order to upgrade a ladle treatment stand at its Calvert, Alabama plant to a 180mt twin ladle furnace, with startup scheduled for March 2028. Replacing equipment commissioned in 2012, the new furnace will provide electrical heating following the AOD converter, improving temperature control, process flexibility, and productivity while reducing energy consumption and carbon footprint, utilizing the existing plant layout and foundations. The scope covers mechanical and electrical equipment, automated argon lancing, hydraulic systems, Level 1 automation, and the Primetals Melt Expert electrode control system. Outokumpu's Calvert facility currently melts up to 100% stainless steel scrap in a 160mt electric arc furnace before processing in a 180mt AOD converter, with two ladle treatment stands and a single-strand slab caster.

[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] Chinese Taiwan's Stainless Steel Export Prices Rise in June Despite Volume Drop
Chinese Taiwan's stainless steel industry showed divergent trends in June, with import volumes surging 24% MoM to 120,500 tons — a two-year high — while exports slipped below the 70,000-ton threshold to 68,100 tons, down 11.9% from May. Despite the volume contraction, pricing showed strength: the export price rose more than NT$450 MoM to its highest level since February last year, while the import price climbed over NT$1,800 MoM to a two-and-a-half-year high. For H1 as a whole, total import volumes of approximately 581,000 tons exceeded cumulative export shipments of 414,200 tons, reflecting that while mills succeeded in pushing prices higher, achieving simultaneous growth in overseas shipment volumes remained a challenge.
