According to SMM, Marna Cloete, CEO of Ivanhoe Mines, said that the company plans to build a copper mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The company has been expanding the mine since 2021 and now aims to produce about 600,000 tonnes of copper next year, with this year's production target being around 450,000 tonnes. Cloete estimates that Ivanhoe can start producing copper from the Western Foreland project in about five years, gradually expanding from an initial production target of about 300,000 tonnes.
