Germany to end funding for new battery research projects: the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has confirmed earlier rumours. From 2025 onwards, the German federal government will no longer fund new battery research projects through the Climate and Transition Fund, but will instead use limited funds to ensure support for existing projects. According to the German federal government's budget plan, research allocations in the field of batteries in 2025 will amount to approximately €118 million, a reduction of approximately 23.9 per cent compared to 2024. These funds will all be used to support existing projects.SMM believes that since the Russia-Ukraine war, affected by high energy prices and the Fed's interest rate hiking cycle, Germany's economic recovery, which is based on industry as a pillar industry, has been weak. The recession in Germany has been more pronounced than in other European countries. The budgetary constraints caused by the fiscal crisis may be an important factor in cutting R&D spending in the battery sector. It is expected that this will have a negative impact on battery technology R&D in Germany and even in Europe.
