Hindalco announced a bold $10 billion investment plan to expand its domestic operations and U.S.-based aluminium recycler Novelis Inc, Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said during the metals refiner's shareholder meeting on 22nd August, which marked a significant step in Hindalco's efforts to bolster its production capacity and improve its position in the global aluminium market.

Key Highlights:

For India Operations:

  1. Aditya Aluminium Smelter Expansion: Hindalco is planning a significant expansion at its Aditya Aluminium smelter in Odisha, aiming to boost its smelting capacity by 200,000 tonnes per annum (TPA). This expansion will primarily leverage renewable energy sources, aligning with the company’s sustainability goals.

  2. Flat Rolled Products (FRP) Capacity Expansion: Hindalco is also constructing the capacity of Flat Rolled Products (FRP) at Aditya Aluminium in Odisha. This plant is expected to meet the increasing demand for FRP in infrastructure and industrial applications.

  3. New Downstream Facilities:

    1. Silvassa Extrusion Plant: The newly operational extrusion plant in Silvassa, with a capacity of 34,000 TPA, is designed to cater to the growing demand in the electric vehicle (EV) sector.

    2. Chakan Battery Enclosure Fabrication Plant: This facility, which is nearing completion, will play a crucial role in the production of battery enclosures for EVs.

    3. Aluminum Battery Foil Plant in Odisha: Another strategic addition is the aluminium battery foil plant in Odisha, set to start operations soon, which will serve both domestic and international battery manufacturers.

  4. New Rayagada Alumina Refinery: In a significant upstream expansion, Hindalco is setting up a new greenfield alumina refinery in Rayagada, Odisha. The first phase, with a capacity of 850,000 TPA, is expected to be commissioned by FY27.

For Novelis:

  1. Bay Minette Project: Novelis is investing heavily in a new rolling and recycling facility in Bay Minette, Alabama, USA, which will have a finished goods capacity of 600,000 TPA. This facility is scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2026.

  2. North American Automotive Recycling Center: Novelis has started operations at an advanced automotive recycling centre in North America, furthering its commitment to increasing recycled aluminium content and reducing carbon emissions.

  3. Latchford UBC Recycling Expansion: In the UK, Novelis is expanding its used beverage can (UBC) recycling capacity at the Latchford facility, supporting its sustainability initiatives.

These extensive expansion projects underscore Hindalco and Novelis's strategic focus on meeting the growing global demand for aluminium, particularly in sectors like electric vehicles, renewable energy, and infrastructure. The investments are expected to solidify the companies’ leadership in sustainable metal production and drive future growth.

Alvance Boosts Aluminium Output by 10% at UK's Only Primary Plant, Enters US Market Amid Tariff Changes
[SMM Aluminum Express News] Alvance British Aluminium has boosted output by ~10% at its Lochaber smelter in Fort William, Scotland (UK’s only primary aluminium plant), thanks to recent US tariff changes. The GFG Alliance-owned facility (48,000 tpy capacity, hydro-powered) now exports about half its production to the US for the first time. Managing Director Tom Uppington: “We increased production in response to shifting trade flows after US tariffs, entering the US market while serving UK and European customers.” President Trump set a 50% global tariff on steel/aluminium imports, but the UK secured a preferential 25% rate (vs. 50% for Canada), making UK metal more competitive. The US still relies on imports for automotive and aerospace sectors.
