[Italy Formulates PNIEC Plan, Aiming for Renewable Energy to Account for 40% of Total Final Energy Consumption by 2030] To achieve the European Union's (EU) energy and climate greenhouse gas emission targets by 2030, EU countries need to formulate a 10-year integrated national energy and climate plan for the period from 2021 to 2030. Italy has formulated a plan named PNIEC. The goal of PNIEC is to have renewable energy account for 40% of total final energy consumption by 2030 (currently less than 20% of the total), specifically 65% of electricity consumption by 2030 (currently about 35% of the total). From 2022 to 2023, the installed capacity of Italy's new renewable energy power stations nearly doubled, from 3GW to about 6GW, mainly in the photovoltaic field.
