Recently, the National Energy Administration held a press conference to release the energy situation and renewable energy grid operation in H1, introduce the development of new energy storage and the issuance of green certificates, and share survey cases on the deployment and effectiveness of new energy storage this year.
Firstly, Shandong Province has innovated its deployment methods. During periods of ample electricity supply, independent energy storage self-scheduling is implemented; during periods of tight electricity supply and difficulties in new energy consumption, unified grid scheduling is accepted, and the utilization level of new energy storage continues to increase. Additionally, pilot projects have been carried out to convert supporting energy storage into independent energy storage, leveraging the effectiveness of various types of energy storage. In H1 2024, Shandong's new energy storage equivalent utilization hours reached 520 hours, up 153 hours YoY, and the consumption of new energy electricity was 710 million kWh, up 214% YoY.
Secondly, Jiangsu Province has strengthened top-level design, optimized grid connection processes, and coordinated special scheduling to promote the leapfrog development of new energy storage. On July 15, Jiangsu conducted a centralized deployment test of new energy storage, with the province's new energy storage providing about 5 million kW of peak capacity. On July 23, Jiangsu's power load reached a historical high, with an estimated power gap of about 6 million kW. New energy storage provided about 4 million kW of peak capacity in practical applications, effectively filling the power gap and providing important support for power supply security. According to Jiangsu Province's estimates, the newly commissioned new energy storage this year can effectively save other power construction investments and is expected to help the grid consume about 3 billion kWh of new energy electricity annually, with significant benefits in various aspects.
Additionally, Zhejiang and Liaoning are exploring new energy storage applications based on local conditions. For example, the commissioning of a 200,000 kW/400,000 kWh lithium battery energy storage station in Zhejiang has alleviated the heavy load on a 500 kV main transformer section, provided conditions for gas turbine maintenance, and promoted regional power balance. In Liaoning, a 100,000 kW/400,000 kWh flow battery energy storage station successfully conducted a black start test for a large-capacity thermal power unit, verifying the feasibility of starting thermal power units through the main grid, which helps enhance the safety and resilience of the urban power grid.
