During the week, the SMM 8-12% NPI weekly average price was 987.1 yuan/mtu (ex-factory, tax included), up 14.3 yuan/mtu from a week ago. The Indonesian NPI FOB index rose 1.46% MoM to $1.7/mtu, with the price increase of NPI expanding this week. Supply side, domestically, current NPI production is running at a low level. A high NPI smelter in north China publicly sought production line leasing cooperation, which may have a limited impact on supply. In Indonesia, the shortage of laterite nickel ore has not been resolved, with inventory at smelters at a low level. The shortage of laterite nickel ore in the Weda Bay area is particularly prominent, and NPI production in July is expected to decline. Additionally, the shortage of laterite nickel ore has led to limited approval of export resource tax tickets, affecting short-term Indonesian NPI exports. Demand side, a stainless steel plant in east China released procurement this week, together with destocking in stainless steel social inventory, keeping spot prices stable. There is no significant reduction in production expected for stainless steel plants. The second-largest private stainless steel plant in China faced bankruptcy restructuring disputes, but according to the SMM survey, the company's production remains normal in the short term. In summary, there is an expectation of reduced NPI supply, while downstream demand remains relatively stable, leading to a strong short-term NPI price trend.

In terms of the price spread between NPI and refined nickel, the average discount of NPI to refined nickel was 285 yuan/mtu, narrowing by 63.3 yuan/mtu from a week ago. NPI prices hit a recent high this week due to tight market circulation resources and strong cost support, with rigid demand pushing market transaction prices to new highs. For refined nickel, the uncertain outlook of the US election increased market risk aversion, leading to a decline in non-ferrous metals, with weak fundamentals causing nickel prices to fall to around 124,000 yuan/mt. The weekly average price of refined nickel fell 3.71% MoM to 127,210 yuan/mt. The discount of NPI to refined nickel continued to narrow this week. In the short term, there is an expectation of NPI supply being less than demand, while nickel prices are expected to have limited downside due to cost support, with the price spread between the two expected to narrow next week but at a slower pace than this week.

[SMM Nickel Morning Meeting Summary] Rising US Treasury yields intensify macro pressure, the most-traded SHFE nickel contract opens lower and trends lower in early trading
[9.29 Morning Meeting Summary] US Treasuries had their worst week in 19 months. Last Friday, the 10-year Treasury yield surged above 5.22% intraday (a new high since 2007), and the 30-year broke above 5.5% (a new high since 2004), rising for four consecutive weeks. Japanese and US officials released signals that "a weak yen is problematic," and the yen rebounded more than 1% intraday. US stocks stopped falling and rebounded on Friday, with the Dow up 0.93% and the S&P 500 up 0.51%. Gold futures halted a four-day losing streak but still fell more than 2% for the week. The most-traded SHFE nickel contract (2610) opened lower and moved lower in early trading, closing the morning session at 123,640 yuan/mt, down 1.21%. The surge in US Treasury yields above 5.2% and a strong US dollar brought macro pressure back to the forefront, compounded by significant LME inventory buildup during the Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, leading to a catch-up decline in SHFE nickel at today's open. Funds may maintain a wait-and-see sentiment ahead of the holiday. In the short term, the most-traded SHFE nickel contract is expected to trade in the range of 123,000-126,000 yuan/mt.

【SMM Nickel Flash News】ITCZ Brings Rain and Thunderstorms Across Key Philippine Nickel Areas
The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is currently affecting Palawan, the Visayas and Mindanao, bringing cloudy conditions, scattered rains and thunderstorms. ITCZ expected continue affecting Caraga, Northern Mindanao and most of the Visayas through September 29, with rain and thunderstorms potentially continuing into October 2 due to an additional weather system. For the Philippine nickel industry, Palawan, Surigao and Homonhon may see intermittent moderate to heavy rainfall, which could temporarily slow mine-road transportation, ore barging and vessel loading. Potentially, it could trigger localized flooding or landslides in affected areas. SMM views that The ITCZ is currently a weather-related operational risk rather than a broad supply disruption. Short-duration heavy rain could cause temporary delays in mining and logistics, but the overall impact will depend on rainfall intensity and persistence at individual mining and loading sites.
