According to SMM, India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated in her 2024-25 fiscal year budget speech that given the critical importance of minerals such as lithium, copper, cobalt, and rare earth elements to industries like nuclear energy, renewable energy, telecommunications, and high-tech electronics, "I propose to fully exempt the customs duties on 25 key minerals and reduce the basic customs duty (BCD) on two of these minerals. This will significantly boost the processing and refining of such minerals and help ensure availability for these strategic and critical sectors.
