General Motors’ China NEV retail sales jump 24.1% YoY in Q2 2024

In the second quarter of this year, General Motors (GM) achieved retail sales of over 370,000 vehicles in the Chinese market, according to GM's press release.

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- In the second quarter of this year, General Motors (GM) achieved retail sales of over 370,000 vehicles in the Chinese market, according to GM's press release.

In this quarter, its new energy vehicle (NEV) sales in China jumped 24.1% year on year to over 143,000 units, including both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). NEVs accounted for 38% of GM China's quarterly sales, setting a new record for the same period. GM said it aims to continue this momentum in 2024 with a series of new NEV product to be launched.

Breaking down the second-quarter China retail sales by specific brands, the Buick brand sold over 81,000 units. Of those, the Buick GL8 achieved nearly 20,000-unit sales, with the GL8 PHEV launching in the quarter, strengthening its strong position in the MPV market. Meanwhile, sales of the Buick Velite 6 BEV more than tripled year-on-year, surpassing 17,000 units.

In the second quarter, Cadillac sold over 29,000 units in China, with the Cadillac CT5 leading the brand's sales, exceeding 16,000 units. The OPTIQ SUV (Chinese name: IQ Ao Ge), Cadillac's second Ultium-based BEV model released for China (the first one is LYRIQ), further boosted the brand's performance in the luxury pure electric SUV sector.

In the Apr.-Jun. period, Chevrolet sold nearly 10,000 units in the country, with the Chevrolet Monza continuing to serving as the biggest sales contributor. The Tahoe, which has been the best-selling full-size SUV in the U.S. for several years, will be introduced to China this year through GM's high-end import and lifestyle platform, The Durant Guild.

The combined sales of SAIC-GM-Wuling's Wuling and Baojun brands exceeded 252,000 vehicles in the second quarter. The Wuling Binguo and the Wuling Hongguang MINIEV models together recorded a sales volume of over 78,000 units. In addition, sales of the Wuling Xingguang (including both the BEV and PHEV versions) totaled nearly 20,000 units.
