[SMM Analysis] FlexGen will deploy 15MW BESS for Arclight and Infinigen in Puerto Rico

Published: Apr 22, 2024 18:12
FlexGen, an energy storage system integrator, has partnered with IPP Arclight and its subsidiary Infinigen Renewables to deploy a 15MW BESS project in Puerto Rico. On April 18, the two companies announced the project, which will pair 32 megawatts of solar energy with a 15 megawatt battery energy storage system BESS. It will be deployed in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, an unincorporated overseas territory of the United States in the Caribbean, in conjunction with the YFN Yabucoa Solar Project.

FlexGen said it will use its HybridOS energy management system EMS to provide reliability and flexibility to the local power grid and comply with the "some of the most demanding grid specifications" proposed by the archipelago's transmission system operator TSO Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority.

SMM believes that after the hurricanes in 2017 and the earthquake in 2020 damaged or destroyed 80% of Puerto Rico's power grid infrastructure, Puerto Rico has been rebuilding and improving the resilience of its energy sector in the past few years.

This includes grid-scale solar and storage projects, such as those recently reported by EPC company DEPCOM and IPP Genera PR, as well as home battery virtual power plants (VPPs), such as the 17MW project led by US residential energy solutions and management company Sunrun.

Arclight is an independent power producer (IPP) headquartered in the United States, mainly operating natural gas power plants, but has made significant plans to deploy BESS technology in these power plants after they have been decommissioned. In 2021, the company launched Infinigen Renewables and committed to investing $400 million to develop and operate its renewable energy assets. At the same time, it launched an independent BESS developer Elevate last year.
