Recently, Volkswagen Group released its automotive sales data for the first quarter of 2024:

Volkswagen Group's deliveries in the first quarter of 2024 increased by 3% to 2.1 million units. The main drivers of growth were China (+8%), South America (+14%), and North America (+5%). Combustion engine vehicles increased by 4% to 1.97 million units, offsetting the slight decrease of 3% in pure electric vehicles (BEV).

In the pure electric vehicle (BEV) segment, strong growth in China (+91%) did not fully offset the decline in Europe (-24%). However, in the entire first quarter, BEV orders in Western Europe showed good growth, with the number of orders for pure electric vehicles more than doubling compared to the same period last year (+154%). Therefore, the BEV order backlog in Western Europe is currently around 160,000 units, indicating steady growth in BEV sales in the region over the next two months.

The delivery situation for the first quarter of 2024 in each region is as follows:

  • In Europe, deliveries amounted to 906,700 units (-0.3%), remaining stable compared to the previous year. Among these, 74,400 units were pure electric vehicles (-24%). In Western Europe, a total of 790,100 vehicles were delivered to customers (-1%), with 271,200 vehicles in the group's home market of Germany (-1%). In Central and Eastern Europe, deliveries amounted to 116,600 units (+2%).

  • In North America, Volkswagen Group's deliveries increased by 5% to 227,100 units. Deliveries in the United States were 155,900 units (-2%), with pure electric vehicle deliveries in the United States at 13,200 units (-16%).

  • In South America, the group's deliveries to customers increased by 14% compared to the same period last year, totaling 118,500 units. Sales in Brazil, which grew particularly strongly, increased by 26%, totaling 93,500 units.

  • Overall, deliveries in the Asia-Pacific region increased by 5% to 764,800 units. China is the group's largest single market and the main driver of growth for the group. Despite the challenging competitive environment in the Chinese market, deliveries in China increased by 8% to 693,600 units. The growth of pure electric vehicle models was particularly strong, increasing by 91% to 41,000 units.
