Today's lithium carbonate market saw a modest increase, with the SMM index at 111,571 yuan/ton (~15,431.67 USD/ton) and futures rising by 0.44%, amid slight fluctuations.

Market Overview and Price Trends:

The SMM battery-grade lithium carbonate index slightly increased to 111,571 yuan/ton (~15,431.67 USD/ton), up by 6 yuan. Battery-grade lithium carbonate prices were between 110,500 yuan/ton (~15,283.54 USD/ton) and 113,500 yuan/ton (~15,698.48 USD/ton), with the average price at 112,000 yuan/ton (~15,491.01 USD/ton), marking a 150 yuan increase. Industrial-grade lithium carbonate saw prices range from 107,000 yuan/ton (~14,799.45 USD/ton) to 110,000 yuan/ton (~15,214.38 USD/ton), with the average reaching 108,500 yuan/ton (~15,006.92 USD/ton), up by 500 yuan.

Today's lithium carbonate market reflects cautious sentiment among producers and trading companies' interest in securing supplies, against a backdrop of just-in-time purchasing strategies from downstream enterprises. Despite the minimal price increase, the market is navigating through minor fluctuations, closely monitoring supply dynamics and downstream purchasing strategies.

Futures Market Movement:

The lithium carbonate (2407) main futures contract saw a 0.44% rise, opening at 114,000 yuan/ton (~15,767.63 USD/ton) and closing at 114,150 yuan/ton (~15,788.38 USD/ton). The trading volume reached 159,011 lots, with open interest marginally increasing by 400 lots to 184,198 lots. The day began with a notable decline in prices, followed by a recovery, indicating a volatile trading session but ultimately closing with a slight increase.

Concluding Insights:

The lithium carbonate market today demonstrates slight upward adjustments in both the spot and futures markets amidst ongoing cautious sentiment and strategic purchasing. With the lithium-ion battery industry maintaining a balance of robust supply and demand, the market's short-term trajectory is expected to continue with minor fluctuations, underpinned by strategic adjustments from both suppliers and buyers.

SQM, Codelco Outline Expansion Plan to Lift Lithium Output to 470,000 mt/y
SQM and Codelco's lithium joint venture, Novandino, has outlined plans in an environmental impact assessment (EIA) filing to increase annual lithium production capacity from around 270,000 mt currently to as much as 470,000 mt. The expansion is aimed at meeting long-term demand from electric vehicles and grid-scale energy storage. According to the filing, production will first gradually rise to around 300,000 mt before transitioning over seven years to an integrated production system incorporating direct lithium extraction (DLE), with additional capacity expected to come online over several years.

Congo cobalt exporters fear losing quotas due to administrative glitch, sources say
According to an industry letter seen by Reuters, exporters have been unable to submit export declarations through the customs platform since July 1 because ARECOMS, the Democratic Republic of Congo's strategic minerals regulator, has not formally notified customs to continue processing export quotas. As a result, major producers including CMOC Group, Glencore, Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) and Huayou Cobalt have been unable to complete export procedures. Meanwhile, ARECOMS requires companies to utilize their first-half export quotas by July 5, after which any unused volumes will be withdrawn and reallocated. Industry sources estimate that around 60%–75% of companies are unlikely to meet the deadline due to administrative delays. If the issue is not resolved promptly, up to 20,000 tonnes of cobalt exports, worth approximately US$1.1 billion at current prices, could be affected. CMOC alone could lose almost all of its second-quarter export quota. SMM will continue to monitor developments.
