Rio Tinto and Chinalco group discuss strategic partnership, eye industry growth

On March 24, at the headquarters of the Chinalco Group, Chairman Duan Xiangdong hosted a meeting with Jakob Stausholm, CEO of the Rio Tinto Group, along with his accompanying delegation. The discussions were extensive, focusing on advancing practical collaboration to achieve mutually beneficial growth.

The collaboration between Chinalco Group and Rio Tinto Group has entered a new phase in history. As Chinalco Group's largest single shareholder, this partnership fosters mutual learning and synergy between the two entities. It holds significant importance for the organised and sustainable development of the global aluminium industry.

About the meeting

In recent days, extensive exchanges and discussions have occurred between the two parties regarding the specifics of project cooperation, resulting in several agreements. Chinalco Group expresses complete confidence in the collaboration between the two entities. It is anticipated that maintaining close contact and communication, along with joint efforts to address any challenges encountered during cooperation, will mitigate risks and enhance efficiency.

Simultaneously, both sides desire to bolster communication and exchanges on the foundation of existing collaboration. This entails refining the cooperation mechanism, actively broadening the scope of cooperation, and striving for even more fruitful outcomes in their partnership.

The partnership

Jakob Stausholm remarked on how the partnership between Rio Tinto and Chinalco will allow them to capitalise on their respective strengths, thereby enhancing efficiency, reducing risk, increasing returns, and better rewarding shareholders. Chinalco Group stands as one of Rio Tinto Group's pivotal strategic partners. Over recent years, the two entities have engaged in close exchanges and collaboration across various realms, yielding notably positive results.

Rio Tinto Group consistently views the collaboration with Chinalco Group as a highly advantageous choice and looks forward to further strengthening communication and exchanges. This includes deepening strategic mutual trust, fostering a culture of shared learning, and expanding practical cooperation into additional domains to realise mutually beneficial development.

Before the meeting, Dong Jianxiong and Tian Yongzhong engaged in discussions with Alf Barrios and Isabelle Deschamps on various aspects of strategic cooperation implementation. These included topics such as talent exchange, scientific and technological innovation, compliance management, and ESG initiatives. The discussions were attended by the heads of relevant departments and units from both Chinalco Group and Rio Tinto Group, emphasising the comprehensive nature of the dialogue.

Vice Presidents Dong Jianxiong and Tian Yongzhong from Chinalco Group, Alf Barrios, Chief Commercial Officer and China Chairman of Rio Tinto Group, and Isabelle Deschamps, Chief Legal and External Affairs Officer of Rio Tinto Group, were present at the meeting.

Duan Xiangdong warmly welcomed Jakob Stausholm and his team, noting the series of high-level meetings, fruitful exchanges, and collaborations that have taken place between Chinalco Group and Rio Tinto Group since last year. These efforts have encompassed talent exchange, scientific and technological innovation, ESG initiatives, and more.
