【SMM Analysis: The First Compressed Air and Lithium Battery Coupled Energy Storage Project in China Successfully Connected to the Grid】SMM News on March 1: On February 28, the lithium battery system of the Compressed Air + Lithium Battery Combined Grid-side Shared Energy Storage Power Station Innovation Demonstration Project in Tongwei County, Gansu Province, a key support project of the National Energy Administration, was successfully connected to the grid. The project is located in Dongguan Village, Maying Town, Tongwei County, with a total investment of 396 million yuan, covering an area of 82.86 acres. It is the first compressed air and lithium battery coupled energy storage project in the country. The project adopts the compressed air + lithium battery combined energy storage method. The first phase project has a construction capacity of 50MW/200MWh, including 90MWh for the 40MW lithium battery energy storage system.

On February 28, the lithium battery system of the Compressed Air + Lithium Battery Combined Grid-side Shared Energy Storage Power Station Innovation Demonstration Project in Tongwei County, Gansu Province, a key support project of the National Energy Administration, was successfully connected to the grid. The project is located in Dongguan Village, Maying Town, Tongwei County, with a total investment of 396 million yuan, covering an area of 82.86 acres. It is the first compressed air and lithium battery coupled energy storage project in the country. The project adopts the compressed air + lithium battery combined energy storage method. The first phase project has a construction capacity of 50MW/200MWh, including 90MWh for the 40MW lithium battery energy storage system, consisting of 15 energy storage units. Each energy storage unit includes 2 lithium battery compartments and 1 PCS manifold cabinet, with EMS access to the energy storage system integration cabinet. At the same time, the battery compartments of the power station adopt modular design, with physical isolation between each module, combined with PACK-level flooded suppression design and total flooding gas fire extinguishing to ensure ultra-high safety. It also adopts intelligent temperature control technology, and the coordinated control of BMS + liquid cooling realizes high-efficiency energy saving. After the project is completed, it can realize an annual output value of 400.7 million yuan and tax revenue of 54 million yuan. At the same time, through the peak-shaving and valley-filling functions of energy storage, it can effectively improve the output characteristics of local power sources, alleviate the transmission voltage pressure during peak periods of new energy power generation, enhance the utilization rate of transmission lines, and improve the consumption and utilization level of new energy power generation to help build Longnan’s important clean energy production base and the 10 million kilowatt-level new energy base in Dingxi.

At present, common energy storage technologies include energy storage types such as pumped hydro storage, lithium-ion batteries, compressed air, flow batteries, and power storage types such as flywheel energy storage and supercapacitors. The parameters, advantages, suitable application scenarios of each energy storage technology are different. With the continuous refinement of power system requirements, single type of energy storage can hardly meet the requirements of construction cycle, configuration flexibility, safety, response speed, energy storage duration, service life, and economic benefits at the same time. Hybrid energy storage has diverse forms, mostly the combination of two or more energy storage technologies with different performance characteristics, which can be simply divided into: hybridization of different types of energy storage, such as flow battery + LFP battery, flow battery + flywheel energy storage, supercapacitor + LFP, flywheel + LFP battery, thermal storage + LFP battery; hybridization of the same type of energy storage technology, such as 1C + 0.25C LFP battery. The hybrid energy storage combines the economy of energy storage types and the fast charge and discharge characteristics of power storage types, which can greatly improve the overall performance and economy of the energy storage system.
