【SMM Analysis】December Lithium Spodumene Concentrate Import Volume Fluctuates Again, Subsequent Import Prices May Follow Market

In December 2023, China's import volume of lithium spodumene concentrate was approximately 435,668 metric tons, an increase of 15.1% compared to the previous month and a 41% increase year-on-year. The average import price was around $1,735.

December 2023 saw China import approximately 435,668 metric tons of lithium spodumene concentrate, reflecting a 15.1% increase from the previous month and a 41% increase year-on-year. The average import price was around $1,735, although this may not represent the actual transaction price. December's increase in import volume can be attributed to production from Australia, with imports from the country accounting for 66% of the total monthly imports. Notably, spodumene concentrate imports from Zimbabwe also saw a significant increase, mainly due to Chinese-funded enterprises in the country focusing on shipping lithium concentrate to China.

It is worth noting that this summary only counts the quantity of lithium spodumene concentrate under customs data. Additionally, raw lithium ore imports from Australia and Africa totaled about 187,495 tons, with an average price of approximately $344.

Market research indicates that the CIF price trend for lithium spodumene concentrate is relatively stable, and Australian mines are expected to maintain stable pricing based on monthly formula pricing. However, there is some pressure on pricing in negotiations with the mining side due to the belief that lithium prices will continue to decline in February and March. It is expected that the import price of lithium spodumene concentrate may still have some room to decrease following the market, particularly if lithium salt prices fall after the Spring Festival due to lower-than-expected demand.

Please note that China and Australia's customs may not accurately record the actual import volume of lithium spodumene concentrate, and this summary is based on the general trend of import volume.

[SMM Analysis] Chinese New Year Off-Season “Reset,” Sodium-Ion Battery Industry Chain Recovery Poised to Begin
February 2026 coincided with the Chinese New Year holiday. Affected by holiday factors, production pace across core segments of China’s sodium-ion battery industry generally slowed, showing an “off-season reset” trend. From cathodes, anodes, and electrolyte to battery cells and end-users, production across all segments declined MoM to varying degrees, while YoY still maintained a certain degree of growth resilience.
