Beijing (Gasgoo)- Dongfeng Honda, the Sino-Japanese joint venture between Dongfeng Motor and Honda Motor, on January 11 announced the near-completion of its first-ever pure electric intelligent factory globally.

The new facility, set to produce the upcoming e:N series electrified vehicle models, is expected to commence operations later this year with an initial production capacity of 120,000 vehicles. Additionally, Dongfeng Honda revealed plans to introduce three pure electric models, the e:NS2,the LINGXI L, and the e:N SUV Xu (“Xu” in Chinese pinyin), to the Chinese market in 2024.

The official statement highlights that the new factory signifies Dongfeng Honda's transition towards "Smart Electrification." With the final assembly line fully operational, the e:NS1, the first vehicle produced in the assembly area, has smoothly rolled off the line. The advanced facility boasts increased automation level, with 230 intelligent robots completing the majority of tasks in the welding workshop, assembling a complete vehicle body in just 90 seconds.

Dongfeng Honda anticipates that by 2025, over 50% of its products will be electrified, with plans to cease the introduction of new oil-fueled vehicles by 2027. By 2030, the company aims to launch more than 10 pure-electric vehicle models, accelerating its entry into the era of intelligent electrification.

According to Japanese media reports on the 6th, Honda is in discussions with the Canadian government to scrap its planned electric vehicle, battery and cathode material plant in Ontario. First announced in April 2024, the 15-billion-Canadian-dollar project was Honda’s largest-ever investment, targeting annual output of 240,000 EVs. Due to external policy shifts, Honda delayed production from 2028 to 2030+ last May and began re-evaluating the plan. The firm has now decided to terminate the project, citing the end of U.S. EV tax credits and delayed U.S.-Canada trade talks. The move is part of its global business restructuring. Since last November, Honda has adopted an emergency management regime to ease financial strain from heavy EV investments and weak EV demand.
