Alcoa announces plan to shut down its Kwinana alumina refinery in Western Australia. Alcoa, the American aluminum producer, announced on January 9th that it plans to drastically reduce production at its Kwinana alumina refinery in Western Australia by 2024. The plan will be implemented from the second quarter of this year, with a complete halt in production scheduled for the third quarter. The Kwinana alumina refinery has a designed production capacity of 2.2 million tons, and has been operating at 80% of its capacity since January 2023. Additionally, Alcoa stated that the port facility will continue to operate for importing raw materials and exporting alumina produced at the Pinjarra alumina refinery. Production at the Pinjarra and Wagerup alumina refineries is expected to remain unaffected by the shutdown of Kwinana.
