Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On December 6, NIO announced the launch of its 2,200th battery swap station in China, which is situated at the Wuwei Service Area on the G30 Expressway. This new facility addition strengthens NIO's battery swapping network along the Silk Road, with a total of 12 battery swap stations and 47 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations now spanning from Xi'an to Horgos.

NIO has been on a proactive expansion path, adding 895 battery swap stations in the current year as of December 6, with plans to accelerate further and expedite the completion of a thousand stations this year. Besides, the company's users have collectively swapped batteries over 33 million times, averaging 60,000 swaps per day, translating to a remarkable frequency of one car departing from a battery swap station fully charged every 1.44 seconds.

In February of this year, NIO CEO William Bin Li outlined ambitious plans, stating NIO's intention to add 1,000 battery swap stations in 2023 (up from the previous target of 400 announced at the NIO Day in December 2023), reaching a cumulative total of over 2,300 power swap stations by the end of this year (compared to 1,305 set at the end of 2022).

As of December 6, 2023, NIO had already deployed 2,200 battery swap stations (including 695 along expressways) across China, forming a network covering seven north-south and four east-west expressways connecting ten major city clusters. Additionally, NIO had boasted 3,485 charging stations with 20,455 charging piles, and got access to over 960,000 third-party charging piles.

Noteworthy is NIO's recent external collaborations in its battery swap business. In late November, NIO announced agreements with Changan Automobile and Geely Holding Group, initiating cooperation in battery swap standards, technology, service network construction and operation, as well as the development and customization of battery swap-enabled vehicle models. Discussions with other automotive companies are also underway.

World's First Mass-Produced Sodium-Ion Battery Passenger Vehicle Officially Unveiled
On February 5, Changan Automobile unveiled its global sodium-ion battery strategy, and the world's first mass-produced sodium-ion battery passenger vehicle was officially introduced. Test data shows that the vehicle equipped with CATL's sodium-ion battery delivers nearly three times the discharge power compared to conventional lithium iron phosphate vehicles with the same battery capacity under -30°C conditions. In extreme cold environments of -40°C, it maintains over 90% capacity retention, and it can still discharge stably even at the extreme low temperature of -50°C.
