Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) in Odisha has provided special grade MDN-250 (maraging steel) for different Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) space missions such as Chandrayaan, Gaganyaan, and Aditya L1. Maraging steel is high-quality steel composed of metals like aluminium, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum and titanium.

It is manufactured using the vacuum melting process.
As per the reports, maraging steel plates are utilised in ISRO's PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) and GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) missions. The statement said that rolling maraging steel needs extremely strict process conditions. In general, greater-strength steels have lower flexibility, and vice versa. However, maraging steel is essential because it has exceptionally high strength (up to 5-6 times that of mild steel) and excellent ductility.
Maraging steel is utilised to launch Vehicle Rocket Motor Casing and other military applications. According to the official, this extraordinary steel type, known for its outstanding strength and ductility, is critical in improving the performance and dependability of essential components for space exploration. Maraging steel is used in aviation for landing gear, helicopter undercarriages, slat tracks, and rocket motor casings, all of which need a high strength-to-weight ratio.
Recently, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) revealed that the laser-induced spectroscope equipment aboard the lunar rover (Chandrayan-3) has successfully detected several elements on the lunar surface, including aluminium, sulfur, iron, calcium, chromium, titanium, manganese, oxygen and, silicon.
