China To Restrict Exports Of Critical Chipmaking Metals Gallium And Germanium In Escalated Tech War

On July 3, the Ministry of Commerce and the General Administration of Customs announced that they have decided to implement export controls on items related to gallium and germanium after approval of the State Council.

On July 3, the Ministry of Commerce and the General Administration of Customs announced that they have decided to implement export controls on items related to gallium and germanium after approval of the State Council.

Starting from August 1, 2023, exports of gallium and germanium related items will be prohibited without permission. This is in order to safeguard national security and interests. 

These two metals are key to the manufacturing of semiconductors.
