On June 8, 2023, the Namibian government announced a ban on the export of unprocessed lithium, cobalt, manganese, graphite and rare earth minerals, seeking to maximize the value of its mineral resources.

On June 8, 2023, the Namibian government announced a ban on the export of unprocessed lithium, cobalt, manganese, graphite and rare earth minerals, seeking to maximize the value of its mineral resources.

Limited quantities of the aforementioned unprocessed minerals can be shipped abroad for research purposes only with the approval of the Minister of Mines and Energy.

The spokesman for its Ministry of Mines and Energy did not say when the export ban would take effect.

SMM believes that Namibia’s lithium resources account for only a small proportion of Africa’s overall reserves, far below Congo (Kinshasa), Mali and Zimbabwe.

The amount of raw ore from Namibia has been relatively small, according to Customs data, so SMM believes that this export ban will not have an impact on China’s domestic lithium battery market in the short term.
