China has become Tesla's second largest market after the United States. Data shows that Tesla's global sales in 2022 were 1.31 million units, of which sales in the Chinese market were about 439,000 units, accounting for 33% of the global market.
It was also reported last week that the Shanghai Gigafactory is making final preparations for the trial production of the redesigned Model 3, and the production line seems to have been suspended for upgrades.
The redesigned Model 3, code-named "Highland," will reduce the number of parts and complexity inside the Model 3 while still focusing on features such as displays favoured by Tesla customers. Musk has high hopes for the redesigned model, and he believes that Highland can compete more effectively with Chinese competitors.
