SHANGHAI, May 25 (SMM) – Australia and Germany have signed a joint statement of intent to establish new research programs to meet climate and energy targets and create new opportunities for key mineral projects. Australian Commonwealth Resources and Northern Australia Minister Madeleine King and German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Parliamentary State Secretary Francesca Brantner recently signed the declaration in Perth.

The joint research will help Australia develop critical minerals industries such as mining, refining and recycling. At the same time, it will also assist Germany in securing a reliable supply of critical minerals to support its own manufacturing and recycling industries. Australia holds large quantities of metal commodities such as lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper that are critical to global decarbonization.

Australia's nickel production ranks first in the world, cobalt ranks third, and copper ranks eighth. Implementation of this joint declaration is in line with the Australian Government's commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.
