SHANGHAI, May 16 (SMM) - In April 2023, ocean freight was largely stable. The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) stood at 1,576 points at the end of April, up 164 points from the beginning of the month, but still at a historically low level.

Global shipping demand was gradually recovering in early May, and ocean freight rose slightly due to rising fuel costs. It is expected that nickel ore shipments will increase in May, and ocean freight may rise slightly.

[SMM Stainless Steel Flash] Chinese Taiwan's Stainless Steel Mills Launch Price Support to Stabilize Market
Driven by rising production costs, Chinese Taiwan's upstream stainless steel mills announced higher August prices despite weak demand and subdued purchasing activity caused by heavy rains in July. LME nickel futures rebounded above USD171,000 and the New Taiwan Dollar depreciated to 32.45, creating severe cost pressures. Market participants noted that the pricing strategy strongly reflects an intentional move to support prices and prevent further market declines. Future market stability will depend closely on ongoing inventory reduction progress as well as external conditions including tight nickel supplies and elevated shipping rates.
