China Electric Passenger Car and Lithium Battery Exports Sky-Rocketed in Q1 2023, Export Prices of Electric Passenger Cars Soared

In the first quarter of this year, the performance of electric passenger vehicles, lithium batteries and solar batteries continued to be hot, with a total export of 264.69 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 66.9%.

In the first quarter of this year, the performance of electric passenger vehicles, lithium batteries and solar batteries continued to be hot, with a total export of 264.69 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 66.9%.

Among them, new energy vehicles led the growth. In the first quarter, the export of electric passenger vehicles was 64.75 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 122.3%, accounting for 43.9% of China's automobile exports, up 5.1 percentage points.

Lithium batteries, as the main power source of new energy vehicles, also performed well. According to the data, China's lithium battery exports in the first quarter were 109.79 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 94.3%.

From the perspective of average export price, according to customs data, the average export price of pure electric passenger vehicles rose from $800 per vehicle in 2018 to $21,200 per vehicle in 2022.

Today, SMM battery-grade lithium carbonate spot prices drifted lower compared with the previous working day. The lithium carbonate 2701 contract opened higher at 150,500 yuan/mt today, then moved sideways above the average price line after the open, hitting an intraday high of 152,300 yuan/mt in early trading. Prices weakened around midday and broke below the average price line. In the afternoon, bears stepped up selling pressure, sending prices steadily lower to an intraday low of 140,500 yuan/mt. In late trading, prices consolidated at lows and closed near 141,900 yuan/mt, ultimately settling down 7.41% at 141,900 yuan/mt, with open interest falling by 1,647 lots. In the spot market, downstream buyers were buying the dip to stockpile for September and October, while upstream lithium chemical plants showed weak willingness to sell spot cargoes. Overall, market inquiries and actual transactions were relatively active.
