1. Artificial intelligence (AI)
Charlie Munger is skeptical of artificial intelligence, although he admits it will rapidly transform many industries. Buffett agrees with him, and while he expects AI to "change everything in the world," he doesn't think AI will win over human intelligence.
2. Successor
Buffett pointed out that Abel will succeed him, but he will also consult with Jain to make the final decision. Charlie said that Berkshire is now very supportive of Abel and other senior management.
3. Shareholding in Apple
Buffett said that our position in Apple definitely does not account for 35% of the portfolio. Buffett admitted that he made some mistakes two years ago and sold some Apple shares, saying that the decision at the time was stupid. (Note: Buffett actually changed the concept secretly here by counting all the wholly-owned subsidiaries he owns as the "denominator")
4. Occidental Petroleum Holdings
Buffett said he likes Occidental and admires the company's management. He pointed out that we may increase our holdings in the future, but we are currently satisfied with our positions. He stressed that he would not seek a controlling stake in Occidental Petroleum.
5. Views on Berkshire's performance
Buffett expects profits to decline across most of Berkshire's businesses as economic activity slows due to an expected recession. Still, Buffett said insurance underwriting, which is not tied to corporate activity, is expected to continue improving this year.
6. Banking turmoil
Buffett believes that people should not be too worried about the recent banking turmoil. But he praised U.S. regulators for their response to the banking turmoil, saying it would be disastrous if Silicon Valley Bank's deposits were not guaranteed.
7. Value investing
Buffett said that when others make bad decisions, value-focused investors will have opportunities. Charlie Munger said that value investors should be content with earning less because the competition is fiercer.
8. Reserve Currency Status of the US Dollar
Buffett said that the U.S. dollar is indeed still a reserve currency now, but it may not necessarily be the case in the future.
9. Inflation
Buffett said that inflation is the most important problem that needs to address. Printing money all the time is insane and we should not continue to do so.
10. New Energy Investment
Buffett emphasized that Berkshire Energy (BHE) actually produces the most wind and solar power in Iowa. BHE's investments in wind and solar are unmatched by any U.S. utility.
11. Automobile sector
Buffett said the auto industry is tough and Berkshire is unlikely to invest in automaker stocks like General Motors or Ford.
12. Evaluate Musk
Buffett believes that Musk is a very good entrepreneur and he has many dreams. He wouldn't be where he is today if he hadn't done something beyond his limits.
