According to foreign media reports, in the nine years as CEO of General Motors (GM), Mary Barra's cumulative pay exceeded $200 million.
According to a document submitted to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) by GM on Sunday, Barra's total compensation in 2022 will be slightly less than $29 million. According to the documents, when determining Barra's salary, the board of directors of General Motors proposed that the company had set a record in terms of adjusted earnings before interest and tax and global total revenue.
Barra's 2022 compensation is made up of several components, including an unchanged salary of $2.1 million, a 24 percent increase in option awards to $4.9 million, an 18 percent decrease in non-option incentive compensation to $6.3 million, and stock awards, which make up the bulk of Barra's compensation, increasing by 0.3 percent to $14.6 million. Overall, however, Barra's 2022 compensation is 0.5% lower than in 2021.
For the eighth year in a row, Barra is the highest-paid CEO of any of Detroit's Big Three automakers (Ford, GM, Stellantis). Barra's 2022 salary exceeds that of Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares ($25.6 million) and Ford CEO Jim Farley ($21 million). In addition, Barra is the only chief executive of the three who is also chairman.
In addition, GM said President Mark Reuss received $14.4 million in 2022, a 14% increase from 2021; Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson was paid $10.2 million, a 6.9% increase; Doug Parks, who is responsible for product development, purchasing and supply chain, and North America President Steve Carlisle each received $8.8 million, a slight decrease from 2021.
