After Indonesia imposed an export ban on unprocessed nickel ore in 2020, it has become a key player in the energy transition industry chain.
The country has attracted key investments to develop downstream processing capacity to produce nickel pig iron, nickel matte and mixed hydroxide precipitation (MHP), and the latter two are expected to become mainstream raw materials for battery-grade nickel sulphate production.
Indonesia, which is expected to account for nearly half of global primary nickel production in the next few years, will be crucial for the battery market as environmental, social and governance issues come under increasing scrutiny.
