On March 13, Volkswagen Group and its battery company PowerCo announced that they had chosen to build Volkswagen's first battery super factory outside Europe in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada. This move will not only strengthen the localisation of the Volkswagen Group in North America, but also allow its vehicles to receive subsidies from both Canada and the United States.
Following the Salzgitter plant in Germany and the Valencia plant in Spain, the Canadian plant will be Volkswagen Group's third battery plant in the world and PowerCo's first battery plant in North America. Scheduled to start production in 2027, the plant will produce sustainable unified cells.
