Rio Tinto Endeavours to Win Support from Indigenous Residents for Its Resolution Copper Mine

The role of copper in the green transformation cannot be underestimated, which has also led many large copper miners to work hard to develop and expand copper resources. One such company is Rio Tinto, which is trying to win indigenous support for the development of the Resolution copper mine. Rio Tinto said it remained committed to gaining more support from an indigenous group opposed to its Resolution copper project in Arizona, which could meet a quarter of U.S. copper demand, depending on a court case the outcome of the case. The solution is key to the future of the Anglo-Australian mining giant, as the mine will produce more than 40 billion pounds of copper for the green energy transition. But the Resolution copper mine is located beneath the federally owned Oak Flat Campground, which some Apaches believe is home to the gods. The Resolution copper mine will create a 2-mile (3-km) wide, 1,000-foot (304-m) deep crater that will destroy the San Carlos Apache Tribal place of worship, which is strongly opposed by the tribe.
