GACC Import and Export Data on Stainless Steel in Dec and Full Year of 2022

In December, China's imports of stainless steel were 236,800 million mt, a decrease of 54,800 mt or 18.79% from the previous month.

In December, China's imports of stainless steel were 236,800 million mt, a decrease of 54,800 mt or 18.79% from the previous month, and down 33,600 mt or 12.42% on the year. The imports from Indonesia stood at 189,800 mt, a decrease of 42,200 mt or 18.19% over the month, and down 22,900 mt or 10.77% on a yearly basis.

The total imports of stainless steel amounted to 3.29 million mt throughout 2022, up 357,500 mt or 12.21% year-on-year. The imports from Indonesia totalled 2.76 million mt, up 524,500 mt or 23.46% year-on-year.

China's export of stainless steel reached 390,500 mt in December, down 10,300 mt or 2.56% from the previous month and down 52,300 mt or 11.82% on the year. The total exports were 4.55 million mt throughout 2022, up 904,000 mt or 2.03% year-on-year.

In December, China's net exports of stainless steel were 153,700 mt, an increase of 44,500 mt or 40.75% on a monthly basis, and down 18,800 mt or 10.89% on the year. The total net exports amounted to 1.27 million mt in the full year of 2022, down 267,200 mt or 17.43% year-on-year.

This week, ferrous metals were in the doldrums, with coking coal and coke staging a mid-week rise. At the beginning of the week, financial markets experienced sharp fluctuations, dragging down sentiment in the ferrous chain and leading to a pullback in futures. Mid-week, Indonesia's cut to coke production quotas drove coking coal and coke futures to lead the gains, though the impact was more pronounced on thermal coal, while coking coal's rise was largely sentiment-driven and short-lived. In the latter part of the week, finished products continued their seasonal inventory buildup, and support from the raw material side weakened, causing the entire ferrous chain to pull back. In the spot market, with the Chinese New Year holiday approaching, purchasing activity slowed down further, with end-users only making limited, as-needed purchases at low prices.
