China’s Daily Steel Output at 2.51 Mt in Dec 2022, up 1.12% MoM

In December 2022, key iron and steel enterprises produced a total of 64.10 million mt of crude steel, a year-on-year decrease of 8.20%, the daily output of crude steel was 2.07 million mt, a month-on-month increase of 2.02%.

In December 2022, key iron and steel enterprises produced a total of 64.10 million mt of crude steel, a year-on-year decrease of 8.20%, the daily output of crude steel was 2.07 million mt, a month-on-month increase of 2.02%. The production of pig iron was 58.59 million mt, a year-on-year decrease of 2.16%, and the daily output of pig iron was 1.89 million mt, an increase of 1.54% month-on-month. The total production of steel products was 65.49 million mt, a year-on-year decrease of 1.13%, and the daily output of steel products was 2.11 million mt, a month-on-month increase of 3.22%.

In 2022, key iron and steel enterprises produced a total of 815 million mt of crude steel, a year-on-year decrease of 2.07%, and the annual daily output of crude steel was 2.23 million mt. The combined output of pig iron was 729 million mt, up 0.03% YoY, and the daily output was 1.99 million mt. The combined output of steel products stood at 802 million mt, down 0.5% YoY, and the daily output was 2.2 million mt. 

In December, 2022, national crude steel output stood at 77.89 million mt, down 9.8% YoY, and the daily output was 2.51 million mt, up 1.12% MoM. The output of pig iron was 69 million mt, down 4.6% YoY, and the daily output was 2.23 million mt, down 1.79% MoM. The output of steel products recorded 111.93 million mt, down 2.6% YoY, and the daily output came in at 3.61 million mt, down 0.8% MoM. 

In 2022, the total national output of crude steel was 1,013 million mt, down 2.1% YoY, and the annual daily output was 2.78 million mt. The national output of pig iron was 864 million mt, down 0.8% YoY, and the daily output was 2.37 million mt. The national output of steel products recorded 1,340 million mt, down 0.8% YoY, and the daily output was 3.67 million mt.

This week, ferrous metals were in the doldrums, with coking coal and coke staging a mid-week rise. At the beginning of the week, financial markets experienced sharp fluctuations, dragging down sentiment in the ferrous chain and leading to a pullback in futures. Mid-week, Indonesia's cut to coke production quotas drove coking coal and coke futures to lead the gains, though the impact was more pronounced on thermal coal, while coking coal's rise was largely sentiment-driven and short-lived. In the latter part of the week, finished products continued their seasonal inventory buildup, and support from the raw material side weakened, causing the entire ferrous chain to pull back. In the spot market, with the Chinese New Year holiday approaching, purchasing activity slowed down further, with end-users only making limited, as-needed purchases at low prices.
